Sense and Sensibility

Kate Hamill’s Sense and Sensibility, an adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel, follows the sisters Elinor and Marianne as they navigate societal expectations of the late 17th century. Our production has an air of humor and whimsy to this classic novel, as opposed to solely keeping the show in a realistic environment.

Marianne is featured in the show as a proficient pianoforte player, so in looking for music I sought out piano sonatinas, septets, and trios. Polwart on the Green, a song featured in the script, was recorded via MIDI. To sonically design a world where the sisters are surrounded by a heightened and surreal series of events, I applied a reverb effect to the Gossips in parts of this show. This created a Greek chorus that serves as a physical manifestation of the pressures that these girls are under.
